Our own pie judgingFollowing the reading of Richard Peck's A Long Way From Chicago, the class decided to have their own contest (without the cheating).
Great PieWe discussed the many facets of the pie judging chapter, including how Grandma gets the special prize of an airplane ride, even without winning the contest. Actually the boys thought the judges were the REAL WINNERS!
Follow-up The class presented their own version of the book, including how stuffed they felt. Characters were drawn for illustrations as well as the study of the Depression. Pie making skills were part of the activities besides discussions of funerals, tall tales, and living in somewhere different.
